JADE and Whidbey Ecollaborative cosponsored a yurt building seminar. During the six-day learning experience participants build a tapered wall yurt. The yurt serves as a writing studio for a University of Washington professor who is writing a book on ecovillages. The instructor was William Coperthwaite who has spent decades studying and documenting traditional craft around the world seeking simpler more peaceful ways to live. His signature design is the multi-level rigid-walled yurt, an adaptation of the traditional Mongolian traveling yurt or ger. Bill has led hundreds of workshops and is the author of A Handmade Life (Chelsea Green Publishing); his work has been featured in Becky Kemery’s book Yurts, as well as Lloyd Kahn’s book Homework. Also included here are pictures of two other unique projects, a porch swing and an outdoor table.
